Transcription options

The two types of transcription style most frequently requested are Full Verbatim and Intelligent Verbatim.

Intelligent Verbatim

Intelligent Verbatim transcripts are a full record of the discussion, excluding ‘ums’ and ‘ers’ and acknowledgements such as, 'mm-hm' unless they add value by showing hesitation or are in response to a direct question. Stuttered and short, restarted sentences are not included unless the transcriber considers the meaning will be lost without them. Basic non-verbal activity is included e.g. [pause], [laughs] etc. These transcripts are easy to read and are suitable for a variety of purposes.

Full Verbatim

Full Verbatim transcripts mirror the discussion word-for-word and include every sound audible to the transcriber, including ‘ums’ and ‘ers’, ‘you-know’, ‘you know what I mean?’, ‘kind-of’, ‘sort-of’ and anything that is said, regardless of how frequently it is said or whether it appears to add anything to the discussion. It also includes a description of the non-verbal activity which takes place such as [hesitates], [pauses], [laughs], [coughs], [gets upset] etc so the person reading the transcript gets a real sense of the interaction and mood of person or people involved. For this reason, this type of transcript is often required for legal cases or depth analysis. Stuttered false starts and short restarted sentences are recorded, along with any opening and closing ‘housekeeping’ comments.

Note: This style involves more work for the transcriber and is, therefore, charged at a higher rate per audio minute.

If your requirements differ, we can discuss and agree a Bespoke Verbatim style. Additionally, other formatting requirements such as time stamps and NVivo compatible transcripts are available. Email us at enquiries@bristoltranscriptionservices.co.uk or call us for more information.
